Action and adventure launched at Carew Castle this Easter

Carew Castle will echo to the sounds of quests, clashes and catapults this Easter, as a lively programme of family events brings the Castle to life from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 19 April.

Set on a stunning tidal reach and managed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Carew Castle is one of Pembrokeshire’s most striking historic sites, with a maze of towers, corners and passageways that lend themselves perfectly to Easter adventures.

The new Great Golden Egg Hunt will turn the Castle into a playground of hidden clues over the school holidays, with children invited to search winding walkways and unexpected hiding places for every last golden egg before claiming their prize. Running daily from 10am to 4pm throughout the Easter holiday, it costs £2.50 per child, plus normal admission.

Each morning from 10.30am to 11.30am, between Monday 30 March and Sunday 12 April, Hands-On: Weapons and Armour will bring a flash of steel to Carew Castle, as children try on armour, lift a battle shield and longsword, and try their hand at swordplay. The drop-in sessions are included free with normal admission.

The Easter line-up also sees the return of the popular Find the Key! treasure hunt, which sends young adventurers off in search of the one key that will spring open the treasure chest. Beginning at 3pm from the Castle gatehouse, the hunt runs from Monday 30 March to Sunday 12 April, excluding Tuesdays, with the prize waiting for whoever tracks down the winning key.

Magical Makes with Whimsical Wildlings will cast a more colourful spell over Carew Castle on Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 April, taking over the atmospheric undercroft from 10.30am to 2pm. Inspired by knights, princesses and castle quests, the drop-in sessions invite children to decorate crowns, swords, flags, mirrors and shields.

On Wednesday 1, Thursday 2, Wednesday 8, Thursday 9 and Friday 10 April at 1pm, the Castle will play host to Storymaster’s Quests: Tower of Doooooom! Created by bestselling author and games designer Oliver McNeil, the live multimedia experience puts the audience in control of the fate of the hero they create, sending them into a world of dragons, traps, treasure and unexpected twists.

For those with a scientific turn of mind, Wild Science with Wildspace will bring hands-on discovery to Carew on Monday 30 March, 4 April, 5 April and 12 April. Sessions include Marine Marvels, Fossil Finders, Owl Pellets, Nest Box Making and a Beginner’s Bird Walk, combining outdoor learning with the thrill of exploration.

Perhaps the biggest spectacle of the Easter holiday will be the Launch of the Giant Trebuchet on Tuesday 31 March and Tuesday 7 April at 2.30pm, when visitors can watch the mighty medieval siege engine roar into action.

Daisy Hughes, Manager at Carew Castle, said: “Carew is an extraordinary place at any time of year, but Easter gives us the opportunity to really show what it can do. The new Weapons and Armour sessions alone are worth the visit – there is nothing quite like seeing a child’s face when they first lift a medieval sword.”
