National Park events reveal the wonders of Pembrokeshire’s night skies

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is inviting people to venture beyond the daylight hours this August, with a series of events that reveal the wild edge of the Park after dark.

From bats flickering through the cloisters of St Davids, to stars rising over Manorbier, and galaxies unfolding inside a dome at Carew – each event offers a different glimpse of what stirs in the Park once daylight fades.

Highlights include a twilight bat walk through St Davids on Thursday 14 August, where visitors can join a National Park Ranger to explore the city’s lanes and Cathedral grounds using handheld detectors to track these protected nocturnal species.

On Sunday 24 August, Manorbier Youth Hostel will host an atmospheric evening of stargazing, with Preseli Astronomy Society leading short talks, hands-on astronomy and a closer look at the tools behind the telescope. The night will also feature storytelling drawn from the myths of the summer sky, and if the weather holds, a guided session under the stars.

Carew Castle will host two events on Wednesday 27 August. High-resolution planetarium shows will run throughout the day and evening, offering an immersive look at the stars, constellations and stories of the night sky. Later, a bat walk led by an expert guide will give visitors the rare chance to explore the Castle grounds after dark, after the site is closed to the public.

Oriel y Parc will host the final event on Thursday 28 August – a full-day celebration of Pembrokeshire’s dark skies, running from morning until late. The day will include solar gazing, live talks, creative sessions and drop-in activities across the site. As evening draws in, visitors will be able to join a guided bat walk (advance booking essential), before ending the day with a stargazing session led by Preseli Astronomy Society – weather permitting.

These events offer a rare invitation to discover Pembrokeshire’s night skies – and the wildlife and stories that come alive beneath them. Further information including times and booking details can be found at www.pembrokeshirecoast.wales/events-around-the-park-4.
