Trebuchet returns for final summer showdown at Carew Castle

Carew Castle’s giant trebuchet will return for its final demonstration of the season, offering visitors one last opportunity this summer to experience the power and precision of medieval siege warfare.

The demonstration is scheduled for 2.30pm on Tuesday 26 August, and forms part of the Castle’s summer programme of live events. Designed for a wide audience, the display offers a rare chance to see a full-scale trebuchet in action and learn how it would have been used during a medieval siege.

Trebuchets were among the most powerful weapons of their time, capable of demolishing stone walls and striking targets at long range. Using a counterweight system to launch heavy projectiles, these machines played a central role in siege warfare for centuries.

Daisy Hughes, Manager of Carew Castle, said: “The trebuchet forces you to look at the Castle as a fortress, not just a ruin. With just one demonstration left this season, it’s a powerful way to see the Castle through medieval eyes – as a place built for defence, survival, and strength.”

Shortlisted for Best Event in the 2024 Visit Pembrokeshire Croeso Awards, the trebuchet has become a highlight of the Castle’s summer programme.

Alongside the day’s main event, visitors will also be able to explore the Castle’s industrial past at the Tidal Mill – the only restored tidal mill in Wales – which remains open daily throughout the holidays. Nest Tearoom, located in the Walled Garden near the Castle entrance, will offer hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and light lunches – a welcome place to pause before heading home.
