Since moving to Wales, Raul Speek has explored Welsh iconography and its relationship to Welsh identity.

Over the past thirty years, the Welsh countryside has undergone significant change, becoming a very different landscape from the Wales we know today. Raul draws parallels between deprived rural communities in Wales and those of his home country, Cuba. Although the two places differ in climate, language and political context, there are striking similarities in the ways people live, connect and create a sense of community.

People need music. They need homes, dancing, entertainment and cultural recognition. They also seek forms of religion and spirituality that help them understand their place in the world.

Cubana Gwalia explores Raul’s fascination with the vernacular life of Wales through painting. His work considers the ways Welsh culture is experienced, remembered and represented, while reflecting on a desire for Wales to be recognised on its own terms and situated within its own history.

Cubana Gwalia can be seen in the Tower from Friday 6 November until Sunday 20 December 2026
