Since 1978 Ian has specialized in seabird surveys, habitat management for endangered species and the conservation of remote island nature reserves. Ever since he could reach above the skirting board, Ian was drawing on walls, scraps of paper, envelopes and any usable surface. Nothing made him happier than gazing at wildlife with a pencil in his hand.
Ian Bullock…A Retrospective
Born curious…a noticer, an observer, a naturalist and self-taught artist, Ian’s work was to record and protect the natural world and if necessary, explain it to others.
Two spells of teaching in Africa, 25 years with the RSPB and 2 years on the Aride Island in the Seychelles were his career up to 2003. Then his travels as a naturalist on small cruise ships worldwide enabled him to develop his paintings of animals and illustrated charts of voyages. He still managed to continue species monitoring at home in Pembrokeshire for another 20 years. Maps, notebooks, field sketches, finished work, a 50-year Almanac, vignettes of Arctic and Antarctic life and more, all celebrate a lifetime of observation, creativity and devotion to the living world.
Ian Bullock…A Retrospective is on display in the St Davids Room from Friday 16 January until Sunday 1 March 2026
