Turning the tide on beach parking at Newport Sands

A season of change is coming to Newport Sands. We’re turning the tide on tradition because we want a better beach, for everyone.

Decades of beach parking has damaged the natural environment and concerns for public safety continue to grow.

So, as a National Park Authority we’ve purchased the land at Newport Sands beach that has traditionally used for beach parking and are moving to more controlled access to prevent further damage to the beach habitat.

We want to boast about the biodiversity, and we want an area that is car-free, so that visitors to the beach can be care-free.

We’re asking you to avoid beach parking and use the designated car park instead.

Don’t forget you can always park for free for 30 mins during the charging period (15 March-7 November) and you can pay for longer stays with cash or online via PayByPhone. Visit our parking page for further details.

We want a safe beach experience for all, so we’re doubling the number of disabled spaces from three to six.

We also have a beach wheelchair to hire from Newport Sands Surf Club (from mid-June onwards) and contribute to running the Poppit Rocket coastal bus (which will operate on its summer timetable from 30 May to 30 September). This provides an alternative way for people to travel to the beach. See the Pembrokeshire County Council website for bus timetables (opens in a new window).

The launching of small watercraft via hand propelled trailers/trolleys (less than 5ft overall width) will still be possible but those requiring vehicle trailer launching facilities will need to use an alternative, such as Newport Parrog (between 2.5 and 3 hours either side of high tide), Pwllgwaelod, Lower Town Fishguard and Goodwick.

We’re not just acting because we can, but because we care. We care about the conservation of this protected landscape, people’s connection with it, and the impact on our local communities.

If we all work together, we can make Newport Sands a better beach for people and wildlife.
