The return of the Summer Minds lecture series will see two thought-provoking talks take place at Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre in St Davids this August.
The Summer Minds talks are non-technical lectures that are open to everyone. Tickets are £3 each and all proceeds will go to local charities including St Davids Memory Café.
Oriel y Parc will be hosting two talks by renowned experts as part of Summer Minds 2018.
Professor Andrew Oswald, who chairs the talks alongside Professor Amanda Goodall, said: “The aim of the Summer Minds lecture series is to bring brilliant researchers to St Davids, to describe interesting and important new ideas in a down-to-earth way. Lots of time is always left for questions and answers from the floor.”
Professor Ian Hall, Head of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University, will give a talk titled Ocean in Motion: Currents, Conveyors, and Climate Change which will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 7 August.
Professor Hall is a distinguished palaeoclimatologist whose research focuses on the generation of innovative high-resolution ocean reconstructions and their link to climate models. He has spent over 500 research days at sea and was recently co-chief scientist of the International Ocean Discovery Program’s Expedition 361 titled Southern Africa Climates. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
Professor Clea Warburton of Bristol University’s Department of Cognitive Neuroscience will give a talk titled Putting a Name to a Face: The Neuroscience of Recognition Memory at 7pm on Tuesday 14 August.
Professor Warburton is especially interested in how our memory works eg how do we remember when we last met a person. She is also interested in why people can suffer from amnesia, in the scientific processes that lead to Alzheimer's disease and has studied links between depression and memory. Clea teaches neuroscience to undergraduate and postgraduate students at Bristol University.
Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre is owned and managed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and is the home of Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales in Pembrokeshire.
